Education Consultant, Critical Care Nurse Residency

The Education Consultant is a registered nurse who influences role competence and professional growth of learners. The focus of this role is to develop, implement, and evaluate content to promote the professional development of new graduate nurses via the Cr itical Care Nurse Residency. In addition, t he Education Consultant works to ensure staff have the skills and training to meet the needs of the patients safely and effectively in the organization. This individual collaborates with the nursing leadership team to meet staff educational needs based on current evidence based research and practices, and applies design principles and integrates technology to ensure effective learning experiences.


  1. Patient Population - (CLINICAL ONLY)
    • Engages in population appropriate communication.
    • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
    • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
    • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
    • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
    • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
    • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
    • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
    • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  2. Job Function: Hospital/Corporate Level Professional Development
    • The scope of the education specialist is primarily at the hospital/corporate level.
    • The Education Consultant is responsible for development, implementation and evaluation of the education plans through the use of education needs assessments as needed, guidance from interprofessional leadership and current evidence.
    • Uses critical thinking, the nursing process, principles of adult learning, teaching/learning theories and age-appropriate teaching strategies in development and implementation of hospital/corporate educational programs.
    • Responsibilities across UC Health include orientation and onboarding, preceptor support/development, coaching/mentoring, quality initiatives, hospital/corporate level annual competency assessment/validation, and student activities
    • Ensures effective learning experiences for competency assessment and validation to reflect practice changes, regulatory agency or organizational policy requirements.
    • Applies design principles and integrates technology to ensure effective learning experiences for competency assessment and validation to reflect practice changes, regulatory agency or organizational policy requirements.
    • Serves in collaboration with nursing and interprofessional leadership, the Professional Practice Organization (PPO), and other UC Health entities to implement nursing education and professional development programs.
    • Consults with, supports and develops unit level educators, preceptors, and staff.

  4. Job Function: Performance Improvement, Evidence Based Practice, Nursing Research
    • Initiates and/or supports, performance improvement, evidence-based practice and nursing research efforts to contribute to new knowledge and improvement.
    • Uses available data to monitor/evaluate performance of programs, initiatives and targeted improvement efforts (ex. HAIs, nurse sensitive clinical outcomes, HCAHPs, RN turnover, etc.)
    • Initiates and/or participates in project implementation (e.g.CDIS, Clinical Ladder, nurse Residency Program requirements)


Knowledge and Skills: The qualities essential to this role are strong interpersonal communication skills, clinical knowledge, and effective problem solving. Evidence of continuing professional growth; membership in a professional organization in area of clinical specialization; able to work flexible hours as needed.

Education: Minimum Required: Master's Degree in Nursing or BSN and Master's in Education

Y ears of Experience:
  • Minimum required: Three to five years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Preferred: 2 years of demonstrated achievement of progressive responsibilities in professional development project management work.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Certification in Nursing Professional Development and/or clinical specialty are strongly preferred.
  • If not currently certified, expected to achieve certification within a year of eligibility
