As a Performance Improvement Manager, you will lead the creation and use of the UC Health Way, building LEAN philosophy, methodology, and tools into the fabric of everyday work across UC Health. This position is a key front line leadership role. Individuals will need to balance Education, Projects, and Recognition to create the safest, highest quality, highly satisfying and efficient patient care, while growing the UC Health staff. The goal is to create a self-sustaining, self-improving system of care.

Education: Create and deliver education through a variety of channels including but not limited to: Classroom settings, simulations, JIT, online, written and projects support (learn while doing).

Projects : Coach teams to use lean philosophy, methodology and tools while obtaining tremendous results.

Recognition: Help to create a management structure which recognizes results obtained using appropriate methods.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable and excellent at organizing data collection and use, coaching teams, teaching lean concepts, and growing others to drive tremendous and transformative change. They will help to create the UC Health Way.



Create and deliver educational courses and material to teach lean philosophy, methodology and tools.

Be an expert resource for how to use lean in healthcare.

Create structured (traditional classroom) course, but also, JIT modules and online material for focused delivery.

Create simulations, and exercises which allow a variety of learners to learn the material through direct experience.

This position will require project management skills and the ability to manage staff without a direct reporting relationship. This is essential because much of the work cuts across normal organizational boundaries.

Keep in mind: If the student has not learned, the teacher has not taught.

Teach by Coaching for Results

Coach teams to use lean concepts and produce tremendous results, while learning new skills.

Work as a project manager/leader but work always to have the teams take on the leadership. Success is when the teams do the work with coaching. (But it may take informal leadership to get this started.)

Be capable of working in the full spectrum of UC Health departments and cutting across organizational boundaries to coach teams working together.

Create The UC Health Way-Management System

Continually work to create the UC Health Way, the overall management system of how we get work done.

Have a full understanding of best Lean practices across health care, other industries, and be able to draw upon and apply to UC Health.

Create routine (standard work) meetings, reviews and reports with an emphasis on making problems, barriers and results clear with a minimum of administrative burden (waste).

Create an appropriate system of recognition. (i.e. Pins, Photos, Web postings, etc.) to recognize teams which have produced great results using lean methods. The intent of this is to organizationally demonstrate and encourage the UC Health Way.

Keep in mind: The ultimate goal is to create a self-correcting, self-improving health care system.

Other Duties as Assigned


  • Minimum Required: Bachelor's Degree in Clinical, Engineering, Business or a related field
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Clinical, Engineering, Business or a related field

  • LEAN/Toyota Production System Experience and/or formal training desirable
  • Data Management formal training desirable

  • Work experience as an operational leader (supervisor, manager, etc.) is highly desired
  • Minimum Required: 3 - 5 years equivalent experience
  • Preferred: 6 - 10 years equivalent experience
