The Monitor Watcher will be accountable for observation and interpretation of EKG rhythms and interactions with the monitoring system


  • Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms.
  • Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.

Clinical Activities: - 65%
  • Observes cardiac monitors. Identifies dysrhythmias and/or changes in cardiac patterns and reports observations to the nurse assigned to patient or the charge nurse.
  • Responds to alarms under the direction of the assigned Registered Nurse.
  • Records cardiac rhythms on all patients every shift and prn. Inputs patient data into the monitoring system.
  • Maintains the telemetry log on all patients being monitored.

Clinical Thinking Skills: - 20%
  • Effectively uses problem-solving skills to anticipate, analyze and solve problems.

Equipment: - 10%
  • Telemetry transmitters and cardiac monitors are maintained.
  • Malfunctioning transmitters are reported to Clinical Engineering.
  • Review the physical demands and assign an overall average percentage of time this position performs these activities.


Primary Purpose:

The Monitor Watcher will be accountable for observation and interpretation of EKG rhythms and interactions with the monitoring system.

Education :

High School graduate or equivalent. Successful completion of ECG Course and competency exam.

Years of Experience :

One year healthcare experience; Prefer two (2) years telemetry experience.

Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Successful completion of annual recertification process for Monitor Watcher.
  • Completes annual certification of mandatory, unit specific, hospital and safety education.
