Surgical Assistant, First Shift, Surgery Department

UC Health is hiring a part-time Surgical Assistant for the surgery department for the day shift at West Chester Hospital. We're offering a $10,000 sign-on bonus!

The Surgery Department Surgical Assistant will support West Chester Hospital's operating room (OR) and Level III Trauma Center, delivering high-quality care to patients based on assessed needs. The major focus is on the scrub role but may also include an assistant circulator role under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Unit Details:

• Management is very hands on when it comes to helping hone your skills.
• Even though there is an on-call schedule, there are less here than at other UC sites.
• The Surgical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care before, during, and after surgery. The primary purpose of this position is to perform tasks which permit the surgeon to complete an efficient and safe operation.
• The surgical assistant needs to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in a variety of surgical specialties and the initiative to continually expand and refine clinical skills. It is also someone who identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the patient's position is comfortable and safe, while achieving the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure. Padding all points of pressure: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, & axially region.
• Prevents impairment of circulation using a tourniquet for some procedures and guards against nerve damage.
• Knowledge about common positions related to surgical procedures and is able to use the following equipment for positioning: fracture tables, head stabilizers, body stabilizers, C-arm extensions, and any other equipment needed.
• Providing visualization of the operative site by following: Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding. Packing with sponges. Digital tissues. Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging. Manipulation of suture materials: loops, tags, running sutures. Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view.

• Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment, and involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
• Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with homeostasis including techniques to assist with closure of body planes, running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or nonabsorbable material, subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips, closing skin with method indicated by surgeon.
• Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon. Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings which may include liquid or spray occlusive materials, absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping, or immobilizing dressing. Providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
• Evaluates the patient for any possible positioning damage following the procedure and reports abnormal conditions to the surgeon. Assists in the treatment and documentation of abnormal conditions.

Qualifications

Education: Associate's degree required

Certification: NSAA, CFA, PA-C or CRNFA.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, excellent eye-hand coordination, and ability to stand for long periods.
