Director of Nursing Administration (Acute Care Medicine)

Job Description

UC Health is hiring a full-time, on-site, Director of Nursing Administration (Acute Care Medicine) at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC).

The Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall strategic planning for all clinical programs to ensure implementation of the mission, philosophy, patient care standards, and nursing informatics to support quality nursing practice. The Director is accountable for the budget planning and resources to enhance the quality of patient care, personnel, and resource management, and in collaboration with senior nursing leadership, the annual goals, objectives, and fiscal targets. This position will oversee 5 medical units with approximately 250 + FTEs and 5 direct reports.

Responsibilities

Clinical Administration:
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team and hospital administration to identify regional and national benchmarks in quality, cost, length of stay, and satisfaction
  • Collaborates with the Managers and multidisciplinary team to develop ongoing quality and clinical performance programs for specific area
  • Shares quality outcomes and measures to nursing leadership along with action plans for areas of improvement
  • Collaborates with Managers and multidisciplinary team to develop standardized operating protocols and operational processes that support evidence based practice
  • Develops short and long term goals for maintaining quality patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, staff development, and innovation in nursing practice and patient care
  • Assists Managers and others in coaching and facilitating multidisciplinary teams to meet quality objectives Identifies opportunities for continuous quality initiatives
  • Creates, leads, and facilitates clinical teams across related disciplines
  • Demonstrates effective decision making through problem identification, alternative exploration, and evaluation
  • Provides problem resolution and assistance in managing crisis situations
  • Ensures compliance to all federal, state, and local regulatory standards

Human Resources:
  • Accountable for effective retention and recruitment of qualified staff
  • Facilitates the development of a diverse workforce through recruitment, promotion, and cultivation of talent
  • Develops, reviews, standardizes policies and procedures, job descriptions, and competencies as necessary for areas of responsibility
  • Administers personnel policies, hires, approves promotions, and transfers
  • Recommends administration of the salary schedule
  • Promotes an environment that recognizes and rewards team work, creativity, personal and professional development, and empowerment Models and fosters positive employee relations.
  • Creates an atmosphere in which teamwork is encouraged and supported
  • Conducts regular leadership rounds, identifying and collaborating with the patient care team in resolving issues and concerns in a timely manner
  • Actively supports the shared governance structure by working collaboratively with the Professional Practice Organization to accomplish goals of the specific areas of responsibility and the hospital
  • Ensures employee grievances are heard within the timeline determined by HR and hospital administration
  • Integrates knowledge of legal issues in patient care and human resources issues into operations management
  • Conducts regular staff leadership meetings for areas of responsibility
  • Ensures appropriate orientation, in-service training, and continuing education of all personnel in specific area

Operations:
  • Maintains full accountability for specific areas of responsibility
  • Establishes and aligns departmental and UC Health strategic initiatives
  • Promotes excellence in clinical programs; continually seeking improvements in technology, quality, and service and facilitates a patient centered approach throughout the healthcare continuum
  • Collaborates with marketing and communications, finance, and operations in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs
  • Facilitates the development and monitoring of operating and capital budget
  • Plans and provides oversight for managing staffing levels and productivity targets for specific area
  • Provides leadership and coaching for specific areas and offers consultation as needed throughout the organization
  • Participates in establishing the service goals and objectives with particular emphasis on customer service, quality, patient safety, and evidence based practice
  • Collaborates with Quality Director, UC Health Decision Support, and Organizational Effectiveness in the analysis and evaluation of continuous quality improvement efforts
  • Coordinates data collection and quality improvement activities in areas of responsibility
  • Maintains knowledge of local, state, national, and institutional budget policy and trends
  • Actively participates in short and long range strategic planning and decision making within UC Health Collaborates with Information Systems and clinical management to develop and deliver readable and actionable reports to clinical and administrative leaders

Customer Service:
  • Participates in selecting targeted areas and develops action plans for quantifiable improvement in patient satisfaction scores
  • Models and coaches staff in principles of excellent customer service
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership, physician leadership, and department leadership to create opportunities to acknowledge outstanding customer service by members of the hospital team
  • Provides ongoing assessment of customer needs (patient, staff, and physicians)

Administrative:
  • Judges when to act independently and when to refer situations to a higher authority
  • Resolve conflicts, initiates improvements in work methods or procedures
  • Demonstrates ability to work in unstructured situations; is creative in dealing with unusual situations
  • Maintains visibility to specific areas, managers, staff, physicians, and patients
  • Represents nursing to hospital departments, medical staff, and the community
  • Partners with appropriate community organizations to fulfill continuum of care needs Coordinates and integrates departmental services within the areas of responsibility ad with other departments
  • Participates in formal and informal professional meetings, speaking, publication, and research
  • Actively serves on medical, hospital, and UC Health committees and designated
  • Functions as administrator on call as assigned Manages other duties and projects as assigned

Planning and Marketing:
  • Collaborates with Marketing in developing internal and external communication efforts and communicates media-worthy events to the public relations department in a timely manner
  • Determines ongoing feasibility of existing programs and services Identifies and develops new business opportunities
  • Develops business plan for potential programs in consideration of mission and profitability
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with community services, physicians, and clinics to strengthen the referral base
  • Works with the appropriate teams in identifying and monitoring clinical benchmarks
  • Collaborates with the appropriate departments to develop services and pricing that is competitive in the market


Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Business Administration, or Healthcare Administration is required.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio is required.
  • Professional Board Certification in leadership and/or clinical specialty is strongly preferred.
  • 3 - 5 years of equivalent experience is required.
  • 7+ years minimum demonstrated clinical and administrative expertise in the area of nursing practice is preferred.
