Reporting to the VP, Operations, the Director of Hospital Operations is responsible for assisting in overseeing and managing the operations of the departments that report to the AVP Operations, which include Radiology Services, Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology, Endoscopy, Laboratory Services, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Services, Respiratory and other department as assigned. The Director of Hospital Operations is responsible for strategic leadership, planning, organizing, facilitating and monitoring of the day-to-day operations across the assigned areas of the organization.


  • Provides vision and leadership to assure long term goals as well as annual objectives are met.
  • Works with physicians, leadership, associates and other departments to create a culture of trust, collaboration and high alignment with the organization resulting in the highest quality of care to patients.
  • Effective in establishing a culture of patient excellence and quality. Creative in developing initiatives for improvement.
  • Collaborate with leadership in building a team and an organization which will assume responsibility and accountability for achieving both the mission and financial/operational goals
  • Working with VP Operations in providing leadership in creating a culture which is predicated on growing trust amongst all team members
  • Provides leadership in the development and execution of key strategies, which differentiate UCMC from its competitors in the areas of administrative services and clinical excellence.

  • Supports clinical leadership in improving departmental efficiency and streamlining operational processes.
  • Ensures programs and services comply with hospital and corporate policies as well as federal, state and local regulations.
  • Effectively prepares, presents and discusses reports, studies, etc., with departmental leadership, Medical Director, physicians, Senior Leadership and other appropriate groups and individuals.
  • Assures implementation of strategic initiatives and policies within the Operations Division

Liaison to Key Clinical Services
  • Maintaining effective communication between medical faculty, medical school administration, and UC Health leadership
  • Establishes communication plan for engaging physician leaders in department planning, evaluation and performance.
  • Engages medical staff in planning and evaluation of services.
  • Involves physicians in service and quality issues resolution.
  • Ensures physician leaders have information, data and other tools to support and assist them in their roles.
  • Assists in managing relationships/agreements with external partners/vendors.

Performance/Data Analytics
  • Establish collaborative partnerships among stakeholders to leverage the benefits of standardized tools, people and centralized activities for a seamless interface to physicians and patients.
  • Partner with IT and system implementation teams to improve system capabilities, workflow, and develop strategies for improved utilization in such platforms such as Epic, ECIN etc.
  • Identify data needs and provide analysis for quality, operational and financial initiatives. Collaborate with department Chairmen, Medical Directors and/or
  • Service Chiefs on analytical needs.
  • Attend, participate in and provide analytical support for the department meetings.
  • Collaborate with outside departments and establish performance dashboards related to the department of responsibility and other related initiatives.
  • Demonstrate and direct employees in using a systematic approach in analyzing and utilizing data in problem-solving and predictive analysis.
  • Ensure that the department goals and objectives coincide with the hospital strategic plan linking to outcomes.
  • Assists leaders in promoting new program development and identifying strategies to engage team members (including Physicians) to enhance initiatives. Develops business plans and/or requests for proposals as requested/required. Reviews and analyzes statistical data to enhance productivity, efficiency and customer satisfaction. Uses results to expand services and improve operations .

Planning & Business Development
  • Participates in organizational strategic planning
  • Oversees project management from business decision stage through final implementation.
  • Develops program specific business and marketing plans, evaluating competition, market, potential revenue, costs and operational implications to ensure continued market growth.

  • Facilitates an environment conducive to creativity in practice, collaboration with all members of the health care team, and the fostering of collegial relationships.
  • Interviews, hires, develops, guides, counsels, and disciplines staff consistent with principles of a caring, fair, and professional work environment.
  • Promotes patient, physician and other consumer satisfaction by facilitating excellent customer service by all members of the health care team.
  • Promotes satisfaction of internal and external customers through effective communication.
  • Communicates timely and effectively to ensures that the leadership team is informed concerning Medical Center plans and issues.
  • Creates an environment of shared decision-making. Promotes multidisciplinary collaboration on operational related issues. Collaborates with patient care services and physician leadership in planning for and providing quality and consistent operational activities based on best practice. Facilitates communication and cooperation across departments to ensure the standardization and continuum of care.


  • Masters Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or other Healthcare
  • 3-5 Years equivalent experience required.
  • 6 - 10 Years equivalent experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with physicians, staff, department leadership to create a culture of trust, collaboration and high alignment with the organization.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience in complex, large facility, preferably an academic setting.
  • Project Management and process improvement experience.
  • Highly motivated; self-starter.
  • Creative problem solving.
  • Previous supervisory, scheduling, operations, logistics with proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant databases that support financial/business/workflow operations
