UC Health is hiring a Flight Registered Nurse (RN) for the Air Care & Mobile Care department at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The Flight Nurse has gained the knowledge and technical skills to provide advanced care for patients aged neonate through geriatric, in complex environments: in hospitals and at accident scenes. By partnering with MDs & APNs and sometimes with EMTs and paramedics, the Flight Nurse provides competent and compassionate clinical care in the most appropriate mode of transport. In addition to maintaining high degrees of certifications, education, clinical competence & customer service, this position has many additional, non-clinical, duties such as: education, committee involvement, performance improvement, and community outreach. The Flight Nurse maintains and demonstrates the highest standards of nursing professionalism and clinical competence.

Air Care & Mobile Care has provided the Greater Cincinnati area with specialized medical transport services for patients in our community for almost 40 years.

Air Care & Mobile Care is the only service in the region to be accredited infour levelsof medical transport by theCommission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

Air Care & Mobile Care specializes in caring for and transporting critically injured and sick patients, wherever they may be, by bringing the world-class care of UC Medical Center to the patient.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Engages in age-appropriate communication, understanding growth and development milestones, and giving clear instructions to patients and families regarding treatment.


  • Involves family or guardians in the patient's assessment, treatment, and ongoing care, recognizing and addressing physical limitations and behavioral health needs.


  • Interprets population-specific data and plans care accordingly, while identifying and responding to unique psychological, religious, or cultural needs.


  • Administers medication, performs treatments, and operates equipment safely, ensuring patient safety and well-being.


  • Recognizes and appropriately responds to signs of abuse or neglect in patients.


  • Works collaboratively with all partners (internal & external) to provide exceptionally excellent patient care on each encounter. Follows all policies and procedures, and reports incidents when patient care does not meet standards or expected outcomes.


  • Prioritizes patients and families by putting their needs and safety first, balancing these with care standards, professionalism, and organizational goals.


  • Makes moral and ethical decisions collaboratively when needed, supports patients' end-of-life care choices, and represents patients when they cannot do so themselves.


  • Maintains patient confidentiality and is aware of and respects patients' rights.


  • Provides safe patient care following established protocols and standards, maintains a secure physical environment, and completes all necessary inventory and equipment checks.


  • Recognizes and addresses the emotional needs of EMS and hospital personnel, ensuring polite and effective communication, and continues care for the referring team even after patient transport.


  • Supports and cares for peers and resident physicians, seeking assistance when needed, and asks for help if emotionally affected by the job.


  • Collaborates with patients, families, medical crews, EMS, hospitals, pilots, and leadership to achieve optimal patient goals and departmental excellence, while maintaining a cooperative relationship with the multidisciplinary care team.


  • Accepts and provides feedback professionally, participates in discussions about patient care and practice issues, and remains open to team members' contributions.


  • Considers all aspects of patient care during transport, including medical, emotional, safety, and logistical needs, utilizing all available resources to ensure safe and efficient transport.


  • Collaborates with peers and managers to maintain departmental operations during changes, low staffing, or challenges, and works with all disciplines to excel in patient care.


  • Completes necessary charting and paperwork, assists with equipment maintenance, communicates efficiently with the center, manages supply inventory, and participates in educational outreach and follow-up processes.


  • Maintains all required certifications and licenses, and obtains state paramedic certification within 18 months of starting with ACMC.


  • Completes mandatory education on time and follows planned educational programs.


  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives, acknowledges the need for further learning to enhance patient care, and responds to changing patient situations by seeking help when needed.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, minimum required.


  • Bachelor's degree, preferred degree.


Years Experience:

  • Five years critical care or emergency nursing required.


  • Previous rotor-wing experience preferred.


  • Previous paramedic experience preferred.


Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to make independent, clinically and operationally competent decisions in a challenging environment.


  • Ability to adapt to stressful situations; capable of identifying strengths and weaknesses and seeks appropriate resources.


  • Able to lead a team approach to patient care.


  • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills are critical.


  • Licenses and Certifications:


  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio.


  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Indiana and Kentucky within 3 months of hire.


  • National Registry Paramedic License within 18 months of hire. Once achieved associate must obtain a Kentucky Paramedic License within 3 months. If associate has a current National Registry Paramedic License, a Kentucky Paramedic Licensure must be obtained with 3 months of hire.


  • CEN, CCRN, CFRN, CTRN or approved equivalent certification required prior to hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Trauma Course (TNATC), TNCC with skills lab or equivalent advanced trauma course prior to hire.


  • Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) or equivalent as determined by department timeframe.
