The Patient Transporter assists nursing staff with various patient care duties to maintain patient safety and promote the smooth flow of patients through the units. Provides areas within the division with adequate supplies and clean equipment. Transportation services may be patient and non-patient requests. Transportation services includes request within the hospital, campus and runs to Linder Center of Hope as required. Must have a valid driver's license for WCH van utilization.

Responsibilities

Patient Transportation:
  • Transports patients to and from the nursing units or other departments, using two patient identifiers, proper body mechanics and universal precautions.
  • Communicates with patient's RN regarding patient needs, e.g. removal and application of oxygen
  • Effectively communicates patient observations and concerns timely and appropriately to Charge nurse of appropriate area
  • Recognizes concerns or situations requiring immediate attention and communicates accurate information to appropriate healthcare team member
  • Orientation of patients and visitors to room and unit Safety measures: call light within reach; side rails up per policy; apply and reapply restraints as delegated per RN

Customer Service:
  • Enters appropriate information in patient flow systems
  • Ensures oral and written directives are effectively and efficiently completed Interacts with internal and external customers in a respectful and courteous manner
  • Presents self in a professional manner Utilizes proper channels of communication
  • Maintains patient confidentiality
  • Assists nursing staff with patient needs by answering patient call lights, communicates appropriately to RN regarding patient needs; responds to patient needs regarding comfort measures (e.g. ice water, blanket, etc.)

Operations/Environment:
  • Obtains needed supplies and equipment for units
  • Facilitates the maintenance of a clean, safe, and organized environment
  • Uses supplies, materials, and equipment economically
  • Maintains cleanliness of transportation equipment, e.g. wheelchairs, stretchers and other areas as directed
  • Stores and puts away extra supplies
  • Performs courier duties as needed


Qualifications

Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational experience preferred, but not required.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Ability to read and comprehend written materials. BLS. Completes an annual certification of mandatory unit specific, hospital and safety education
