The Perioperative Team Manager provides leadership and direction for a specific specialty team within the operating rooms and wherever the intraoperative care is delivered. They will support the Medical Center's Operating Room.

The OR is comprised of a 60/40 mix of registered nurses and surgical technicians. UCMC is a level 1 trauma center. Our OR is a 25 room OR which includes a trauma room which is open 24/7, one cysto suite, a hybrid room for endoscopic hearts and a cath lab/OR for endovascular procedures. The remainder of the rooms are often high acuity patients undergoing surgery for various specialties. These rooms encompass Neurosurgery, Eyes, Ears, Oral, Spine, Orthopedic, Burns, plastic, podiatry, Transplant, vascular, GU, Robotics, General Surgery, thoracic, pulmonary, laparoscopic and gynecology.

Responsibilities

Planning/Evaluating/Communicating - Overall management of team:
  • Identifies need for new policies and initiates development.
  • Fosters an environment of open communication and trust. Demonstrates expertise in conflict management.
  • Seeks to identify and address global issues of confidentiality.
  • Identifies and initiates the development and design of communication systems that foster teamwork and growth. ( Ex. Team notes )
  • Identifies and initiates the development and design of systems which enhance integrated practice.
  • Anticipates potential problems and develops creative solutions.
  • Recognizes issues and trends that impact health care delivery across the continuum of care and assumes a leadership role in developing collaborative approaches.
  • Demonstrates a global perspective and strong personal commitment in carrying out improvement initiatives.
  • Intuitively responds to subtle changes. Responds quickly and effectively in highly complex, rapidly changing, and/or unfamiliar situations.
  • Collaborates with the director and/or others to proactively plan for the management of clinical and budgetary resources.
  • Practice is recognized as clinically expert by peers.
  • Begins to formulate clinical questions which can be researched to validate or improve practice by peers.
  • Process improvement for regulatory compliance (ex. secure medication storage.)
  • Research projects in conjunction with medical staff (ex. RF ablation, lung lavage, use of chemotherapy agents in the OR.)

Operational Effectiveness - Utilizes resources to optimum value:
  • Facilitates and is a resource for meeting individual and cultural differences.
  • Mentors others in ways to improve quality, efficiency, productivity and cost effectiveness of service.
  • Acts as a change agent, risk taker.
  • Able to expedite optimal outcomes in the mutual process with patient/family using broad knowledge base and utilization of internal and external resources.
  • Champions the cost management process and the impact of cost management to Perioperative Services.
  • Ordering and inventory of supplies and equipment using cost containment methods.
  • Trial and evaluation of new technology.
  • PAR level setting and inventory of specialty items/tissue/implants.
  • Tissue/implant tracking per regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluation of current and future instrument usage/needs (ex. Tray updates, specialty instruments.)
  • Management of turn around time in the Operating Room.
  • Performance of daily operations managers duties when needed.
  • Maintenance of computer information systems (SIS).
  • Rotating manager on-call for the operating room with 24-hour accountability.

Human Resources Management - Promotes personnel growth/development:
  • Actively implements creative strategies to recognize efforts of TUH employees.
  • Effective and secure in own leadership role and promotes development of leadership skills of others.
  • Uses in-depth knowledge, supports/facilitates initial team development and ongoing maintenance and growth.
  • Recognized as a house-wide resource for clinical practice and operational systems. Functions as a mentor and/or coach, formally or informally.
  • Reads/reviews professional journals and materials and shares this knowledge with peers.
  • Orientation planning, implementation and evaluation (ex. team orientation packets, team skills checklists, etc.)
  • Associate yearly performance evaluations.
  • Coaching and counseling of associates.
  • Evaluate staffing needs prior to position posting.
  • Maintenance time and attendance for associates.
  • Enforcement of Corrective Action.
  • Interviewing and recommending prospective candidates.
  • Maintain and perform scrubbing and circulating skills and assist with lunches and breaks as needed.
  • Plan and present team meeting and in-services for team specific topics.
  • Mentors peers to maintain and role model personal professional boundaries.

Customer Service - Establishes environment conducive to patient (customer) care and service:
  • Seeks out opportunities to further enhance the image of TUH with our patients, families, fellow employees, and the community at large.
  • Effectively overcomes personal and organizational blocks to achieve a positive work environment. Significant driving force in creating a positive work environment.
  • Generates solutions to identified customer needs through an organized planning process. Assumes responsibility for implementation of identified solutions.
  • Develops/mentors staff on issues related to customer sensitivity.
  • Develops/mentors residents and medical students.
  • Company representative to surgeon liaison.
  • Hospital to hospital liaison (contact person for lending/borrowing, and procedure information.)
  • Creation and implementation of physician preference cards utilizing the computer information systems.


Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. | Licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Ohio.

Certification in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR) preferred.

Experience: Three years of current Operating Room experience, with broad knowledge of multiple surgical specialties.
