Job Description

UC Health is hiring a Full-Time Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor for the Ortho Trauma, at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The position has a 20,000 sign on bonus!

This 28 bed Ortho Trauma Unit focuses on treat of patients with severe and multiple fractures throughout the body, non-healing fractures, bone infections and other complex conditions. In addition, they help patients recovering from elective orthopedic surgeries including Total Knee Replacements, Total Hip replacements, Total Shoulder Replacements and other Spine surgeries. Our patient population is admitted from the ER, SICU and PACU. Our planned/elective surgeries follow a clinical pathway and are typically discharged to home or SNF within 2-3 days. Nursing care is concentrated around recovery after surgery including mobility, monitoring intake and output and pain management.

The Clinical Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor assumes the responsibility for ensuring excellent patient care is being delivered, maintaining expeditious patient flow with a focus on customer service, and supervision of nursing staff. The Clinical Shift Supervisor will provide input on staff evaluations and complete evaluations for their regular staff cohort. The Clinical Shift Supervisor will also assist with cost containment and manage all employees to do the same. The position requires knowledge of leadership and effective interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Leadership:
  • Supervises staff assigned to their unit or center of excellence and demonstrates the ability to coach and mentor staff. Operational leadership of shift including patient flow and assignment/adjustment of resources to meet dynamic changing needs throughout the shift. Champion efficient throughput and capacity management. Benchmark internal processes to improve practice. Lead and implement operational improvement initiatives and assures compliance via staff coaching and mentoring. Ensures staff behaviors supports and are consistent with the RITE Values, Missions and Vision of UC Health and University Hospital. Provide transformational leadership as related to PFCC. Assist with developing and revising of departmental standards, policies and procedures. Staffing and scheduling responsibility for cohort of staff and shift. Promote patient care safety standards. Actively identifying opportunities for improvement in patient satisfaction, perform trials and report back to leadership on results. Facilitate conflict resolution. Empower staff to participate in decision making through shared governance/UBC. Maintain, support and encourage others with professional development.

Resource Management:
  • Demonstrates efficiency through the appropriate use of resources or supplies to support timely and effective delivery of patient care. Identifies needs for specific equipment and ensures adequate and properly functioning equipment and supplies are available for patient care. Identify operational needs for units including but not limited to needs related to capital equipment; medical supplies; office supplies; hours of practice; minor equipment; and equipment maintenance. Participate in the new hire process: Shadowing process, selection and oversee specific staff orientation to maintain established standards of care and to ensure competency. Specific professional development and coaching for assigned cohort of staff including quarterly rounding and annual performance appraisals. Provides immediate counseling for staff when specific behaviors or incidents negatively affect patient care or the general work environment. Write up incidents. Participates in the corrective action process. Promote staff retention, team building/collaboration.

Performance Improvement/Regulatory Requirements:
  • Ensure shift practice is in compliance with state and federal medical laws (EMTALA, HIPAA and House Bill 316). Enforce and maintain corporate compliance. Identify and oversee risk management issues. Ensures staff compliance with established policies, procedures, standards and accreditation and licensing regulations. Actively involved and engage staff in departmental performance improvement (PI) activities according to department PI plan.
  • Assist the manager in evaluation the quality of patient care and staff performance through: Personal observation. Facilitating quality improvement monitoring activities. Interviewing patients/families/staff. Reviewing documentation.

Clinical Resource and Competency:
  • Maintain hospital wide and department specific nursing competencies and completes annual competencies in required time frame. Collaborate with the Department Educator and/or provides for orientation and educational needs identified in the department. Function as a clinical resource for area of clinical specialty. Promote the use of evidence based practice. Assist in identifying and operationalizing best practices in the unit. Facilitates ongoing staff professional growth.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), required.
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Ohio.
