Violence Prevention Professional, Full-time

UC Medical Center is hiring a full-time Violence Prevention Professional to join our Trauma Center team in effecting change in the Cincinnati community.

In collaboration with the City of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), and the University Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) the hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP) is a community-focused program that provides trauma-informed intervention and case management services to people injured by community violence. We are seeking a violence prevention professional to assist in engaging with patients during their involvement with the HVIP and increase connection to and empowerment of individuals impacted by violent injury and broader community violence. The HVIP's outreach program will focus on victims of gun violence aged 44 years or younger in the three main settings in the continuum of healthcare: (1) in the ED soon after injury, (2) in the hospital during inpatient admission and acute medical care, and (3) after discharge in the outpatient clinic when acute medical issues are resolving and the focus can transition to support of mental, behavioral health issues, PTSD screening, and providing community services.

The HVIP will offer wraparound services to each youth and young adult victim of gun violence inclusive of victims of unintentional, intentional, and self-harm injuries, as well as interpersonal violent injuries who present to either UCMC or CCHMC. The violence prevention professional will be responsible for navigating health and social services with patients, peer engagement and modeling, group facilitation, and other activities. The position requires individuals with lived experiences of violence to engage with individuals in a trauma-informed manner, and to model effective ways of connecting with resources to support healing. The violence prevention professional will be expected to perform a significant amount of community-based work and engage within a diverse range of neighborhoods.


  • Engage clients in the HVIP providing unique support, information, and modeling of positive behaviors, with a particular emphasis on serving individuals impacted by violence.
  • Approach, screen, and enroll patients into the HVIP program, and provide a needs assessment to identify individualized resources and support.
  • Offer and facilitate available resources to each enrolled patient, this includes wraparound services and emergency support.
  • Assist in the facilitation of workshop and group sessions with HVIP participants.
  • Collaboration with HVIP staff and hospital personnel to promote a team culture to support patients in their healing and recovery and provide education to help team members understand the patients' unique experiences, perspectives, and needs.
  • Document all contact with patients and potential clients consistently and accurately in the designated database (Epic/REDCap) according to agency standards, and track attendance in groups or other activities.

  • Regularly connect with patients and families in their communities, providing support for patients outside of the hospital environment.
  • Work with other specialists to supplement support for patients.
  • Assist patients in navigating services, serving their recovery and wellness, acting as a role model in these settings, providing support and assistance in system navigation, managing travel, and setting personal goals.

Program Evaluations:
  • Conducts monthly evaluations and adjusts programs to ensure that services are appropriate, cost-effective, and consistently meeting the needs of the patient population, institution, and as noted by contractual obligations with the City of Cincinnati.
  • Provide periodic progress reports with goals, objectives, evaluations, and recommendations.


Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 0-6 Months equivalent experience required. 1-2 Years equivalent experience preferred.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with youth and young adults at risk for gun violence.
  • Willingness to utilize trauma-informed modalities with patients, including motivational interviewing.
  • Respect and honor for patients' rights and responsibilities and demonstration of professional boundaries and ethics.
  • Sensitivity to and compassion for the diverse experiences of people who have experienced potentially traumatic events.
  • Basic belief that people can change in positive ways.
  • Willingness to encourage and inspire others to make positive changes and find alternatives to acting out violently through support, modeling, and coaching.
  • Ability to work well with others and in groups.
  • Willingness to communicate honestly and ask questions.
  • Punctual and extremely reliable.
  • Ability to present oneself and the program in a professional manner.
  • Ability to take constructive criticism and work well with supervision.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Direct lived experience in an environment at high risk for gun violence is preferred, as is prior experience helping others make lifestyle changes or other leadership experience.
  • Prior experience using a smartphone, email, and the internet is preferred.
  • Knowledge of computers, Windows, PowerPoint, and Excel is preferred.
