The New Graduate Extern is a recent graduate of a nursing program and is awaiting to take and pass the licensure exam by the Ohio Board of Nursing to place them in a Registered Nurse position. The New Graduate will receive precepted training and experience that will assist with successful licensure examination and eventual transition to RN duties. The New Graduate will also perform non-nursing aspects of patient care as assigned or delegated by the supervising RN.
Responsibilities
Patient Population:
• Engages in population appropriate communication.
• Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
• Supports implementation of the plan of care under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
Patient Care- The New Graduate and NCLEX Review may perform the following under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse:
• Observes for changes in patient condition, and reports these to the licensed nurse.
• Collects clinical data, records these findings in the patient's medical record, and reports deviations or significant changes to the licensed nurse.
• Performs treatments and procedures as delegated by the licensed nurse after successful demonstration of competence.
• Responds appropriately during medical emergencies; initiates CPR, assists in obtaining equipment and supplies.
• Reinforces education by the RN/LPN on use of clinical equipment.
• Reinforces teaching provided by the RN and other disciplines.
Communication:
• Communicates patient observations to the licensed nurse in a timely and appropriate manner.
• Orients patients and visitors to room/unit and updates the white boards appropriately.
• Communicates data to the licensed nurse regarding measurements and patient data.
• Documents and communicates with the licensed nurse treatments and procedures performed under the scope of delegation
• Responds to and utilizes nurse call system.
• Reception and phone duties, as directed.
• Retrieves information from the computer.
Environment:
• Facilitates the maintenance of a clean, safe, and organized environment for patients and coworkers.
• Removes equipment when no longer in use to appropriate area for cleaning.
• Re-orders and stocks materials as necessary.
• Reports maintenance issues.
Teamwork:
• Participates in patient admission, transfer, and discharge with licensed and unlicensed patient care services team.
• Demonstrates helpfulness, cooperation, and respect for team members in pursuit of unprecedented patient care.
• Other duties as delegated.
Safety Measures:
• Ensures call lights are within reach of patients.
• Ensures appropriate fall precautions are in place.
• Answers call lights promptly.
• Ensures placement of patient identification bands.
• Ensures that side rails and restraints are applied for patient safety and per policy.
• Uses proper body mechanics and universal precautions.
Qualifications
Minimum Required: ADN, BSN, or MSN. | BLS. | No experience required. Preferred: Prior experience as an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel in Patient Care Services.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
• Must have graduated within the last 6 months.
• Required to attend all scheduled NCLEX review sessions offered by UC Health
• Basic computer skills
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of Nursing theories and concepts, and understanding of standards of professional practice
• Competence in basic patient care tasks (those allowed by law to be performed by unlicensed assistive personnel)
