The ECMO Manager provides 24-hour leadership and accountability for the clinical and administrative activities for the ECMO program and patients undergoing ECMO support to assure high quality patient and family centered care. The ECMO Manager will have a key role at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) and shall model the values, mission, and vision of UCMC. The ECMO Manager will work closely with physicians and other clinicians to establish high standards and continuity of care for patients, serving as a population-based expert clinician, and assisting with staff training and skills development for all individuals providing ECMO care within the organization. The ECMO Manager will have various roles throughout the facility that maintains, regulates, and expands the ECMO program. The ECMO Manager must demonstrate critical thinking, accountability, flexibility, and a cooperative attitude in meeting the needs of the department. The ECMO Manager will provide direct patient care as scheduled by the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support.

Qualifications
Education:
Minimum Required: Bachelor's Degree, Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification - required
ECMO Specialist Certification (CES-A or E-AEC)- required
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)- required
State of Ohio Respiratory Care Professional License- required
Experience:
Minimum Required: 3 - 5 Years equivalent experience Preferred: 6 - 10 Years equivalent experience

Responsibilities
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)
- Engages in population appropriate communication.
- Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
- Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
- Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
- Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
- Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
- Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
- Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
MANAGEMENT -
- Coordinates equipment, supplies, and personnel for readiness to place patients on ECMO
- Develops, implements, and reviews ECMO policies, procedures and protocols
- Develops and maintains departmental staffing plans and call schedules based on volumes, patient acuity, anticipated workload, skill mix, and competency requirements
- Establishes standards of performance for ECMO Specialists, providing counseling and/or discipline where indicated
- Coordinates the transport of ECMO patients to or from outside facilities
- Participates in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of staff for the ECMO program
- Manages performance by assessing competency of ECMO Specialists
- Completes performance evaluations for ECMO Specialists
- Develops, implements, and ensures compliance with policies and procedures, regulatory and legal requirements and current health care standards
- Develops, implements, and evaluates quality and performance improvement activities to assure the ongoing quality of patient care
- Facilitates communication with LVAD Coordinators, ECMO Specialists, Perfusionists, Nurses, Critical Care, Air Care/Mobile Care, and other supporting physicians and medical personnel
- Organize and facilitate ECMO debriefs as indicated
COMPLIANCE/REGULATORY/FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY -
- Assists the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support with the establishment and maintenance of an ECMO budget and capital purchase requests
- Coaches staff on quality assurance initiatives and patient safety
- Promotes cost effective use of human and material resources, including primary and secondary equipment and supplies
- Collaborate with Chief Perfusionist and MCS Manager to coordinate equipment, supplies, and personnel for readiness to place patients on ECMO
- Collaborate with Chief Perfusionist and MCS Manager to ensure ECMO equipment is in good working condition, notifying appropriate personnel if repairs or replacements are needed
- Ensure ECMO disposables are within their expiration period and readily available for use
- Follows ELSO guidelines to achieve highest possible ELSO designation
- Collects and organizes data related to the ECMO program
- Collects and enters data for the national ECMO registry
- Review payroll for accuracy and track time and attendance
- Perform other administrative duties as designated by the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support
EDUCATION AND TEACHING -
- Coordinates the orientation of ECMO Specialists
- Educates patients and/or family members regarding ECMO as indicated
- Assists the Chief Perfusionist with the orientation for Perfusionists related to ECMO
- Oversee learning experiences and mentoring of new and experienced ECMO Specialists
- Coordinates ECMO related training for ECMO Specialists
- Collaborates with the UCMC simulation center for appropriate training
- Foster a climate conducive to educational experiences and professional growth for department staff, students, and other healthcare disciplines
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT -
- Seeks new challenges and is self-directed in identifying resources/learning activities to enhance competence
- Attends appropriate continuing education related to current practice area and role responsibilities
- Ensures that new knowledge and skills gained from education are incorporated into actual practice
- Supports UCMC sponsored outreach related to the growth and development of the ECMO program
- Maintain knowledge of current literature related to ECMO therapies
- Interprets and applies current ECMO research to ECMO practice
- Pursue leadership opportunities and actively contribute to programmatic meetings
- Meet deadlines and attend meetings consistently, representing self and department in a professional manner
