The Lab Technician collects specimens by venipuncture, skin puncture or other special collection technique; receives specimens (accessions) into LIS and performs pre-analytic processing of specimens.

Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED High school diploma or GED required and Formal Phlebotomy training program /externship.
Years of Experience: Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of specimen requirements preferred; prefer familiarity with laboratory terminology, laboratory expected turnaround times; ability to read and comprehend written information required; keyboarding skills preferred; ability to effectively and efficiently perform a variety of job duties in a stressful, fast paced environment is required. Ability to provide effective customer service in accordance with hospital RITE values.
Licenses and Certifications: Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Responsibilities
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)
- Engages in population appropriate communication.
- Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
- Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
- Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
- Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
- Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
- Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
- Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
- Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Collects Laboratory Specimens:
- Performs venipuncture, skin puncture or other special collection technique.
- Follows proper patient identification protocols.
- Follows established blood collection protocols.
- Demonstrates a high level of skill (minimal recollects, blood culture contamination rates, unable to collect, etc).
- Demonstrates excellent knowledge of blood collection fundamentals.
- Prioritizes workload to ensure specimen collection and transport to the laboratory is completed in a timely manner.
- Monitors Mobile Care Phlebotomy System & responds in a timely manner.
- Communicates the status of uncompleted collections appropriately.
- Cleans and stocks phlebotomy cart/tray at end of shift.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service.
Specimen Processing:
- Accessions specimens into Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Ensures demographic information is accurate and complete.
- Ensures proper specimens are received.
- Enters specimen collection information as necessary.
- Confirms receipt of electronically ordered specimens (i.e. Transport List).
- Centrifugation, aliquoting, stabilizing for transport, measuring volume, assessing adequacy of specimens for testing, placing specimens on.
- Transport List for shipment to reference laboratories.
- Ensures that all specimens are accounted for at the end of shift.
- Delivers specimens to the various testing departments.
- Stores specimens into specimen retrieval database.
- Monitors Mobile Care Phlebotomy.
- Adjusts assignments as needed to ensure timely completion of pending orders.
- Monitors (LIS) for additional orders and retrieves samples as needed to ensure the completion of testing.
Performs Clerical and Miscellaneous Duties:
- Answers phone inquiries demonstrating RITE values.
- Cleans and stocks workstation at end of shift.
- Monitors Mobile Care Phlebotomy.
- Adjusts assignments as needed to ensure timely completion of pending orders and additional orders for testing.
- Trains associates/students in phlebotomy/processing tasks.
Safety:
- Follows safety policies and procedures in all phases of specimen collection, transportation and processing.
- Completes all mandatory competencies and training modules; performs regular review and compliance with all department and hospital policies and procedures; participates in staffing meetings.
