The Medical Technologist III performs routine and complex laboratory analyses, identifies, and corrects problems developing alternatives, when necessary, stays current in laboratory theory and technique, and assumes responsibility for problem solving. Requires the exercise of independent judgment and interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Performs duties required of a Medical Technologist II - Acts as the on-site technical resource to all laboratory associates for specimen management, patient testing, quality control and instrument performance to facilitate the smooth operation of all day-to-day activities.
  • Collaborates with technical groups to Implement new instruments, tests, or technical procedures and assist with training.
  • Serves as a communication link between the technical specialists and the department associates.
  • Provides communication to and from their work group with the manager and other lead techs. Provides on-site technical management of areas such as: quality control data review, competency assessment, proficiency testing, preventive maintenance, abnormal patient results review, and regulatory compliance documentation/ reports.
  • Provides operational management of areas such as: work schedules, training for associates and students, supply inventory and purchasing, safety, performance improvement.
  • Assists the manager in activities such as: communicating work area activities, issues, and problems; giving input to the manager for associate performance reviews; giving input to the manager in the selection of new hires; completing special projects/tasks; provides departmental support in absence of the manager.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory/medical technology science with at least one year with high complexity testing, or, Associate degree in a clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology program with at least three years with high complexity testing.
  • MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), or MLT(ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred
  • Must be able to professionally interact with patients, visitors, physicians and staff.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills including superior communication skills (verbal, written, and listening).
  • Must have good analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to multi-task effectively in a stressful environment.
