Sterile Processing Supervisor
Location: University of Cincinnati Medical Center, (UCMC)
Department: UCH-231201-Materials Distribution
Hours: Full Time 40 hours per week
Shift: Second
UC Health is hiring a full-time Sterile Processing Supervisor for the Materials Distribution Department.
The Sterile Processing Supervisor oversees SPD shift operations. Coordinates staff, instrument and case cart management, as well as safe and proper use and maintenance of equipment. The Sterile Processing Supervisor is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, assembly, processing, sterilization of trays, and instruments according to Infection Control Policies and Procedures. Also assembles case carts for OR/OB.

Responsibilities
Performs decontamination functions:
- Disassembles, cleans, and disinfects instruments and equipment used for patient care utilizing correct manual and mechanical processes.
- Operates equipment used in the decontamination process, i.e. sonic washers, cart washers, washer sterilizers, and decontaminators.
- Unloads case carts containing soiled instruments and places them in designated area.
- Performs cleaning tasks in the work area as assigned.
- Uses universal precautions when working in decontamination area, i.e. gloves, face shield, protective gown.
- Utilizes computer system to track instruments and case cart.
Assembles instrument trays and packs:
- Unloads instruments from washer sterilizers and distributes them to appropriate workstations.
- Assembles instrument trays and packs utilizing written instructions and proper protocol.
- Applies sterilization wrappers properly to maintain the integrity of the contents.
- Utilizes heat sealer on packs as needed. Each item is identified correctly on the outside packaging of each item.
- Transports trays to sterilization area.
Operates sterilizers, documents loads, and returns stock to appropriate area:
- Loads trays, packs, and basins onto sterilizer loading rack, utilizing correct procedures.
- Maintains competencies with multiple modalities of sterilization procedures. (Steam, ETO, Plasma, Steris).
- Operates each type of sterilizer.
- Selects the correct cycle and time period required for a specified load.
- Accurately documents all sterilization information. This can be completed manually or through the use of a computer. Biological monitoring is completed per departmental policy.
- Properly handles and restocks sterile supplies in the sterile storage area. All items are rotated as required.
- Demonstrates knowledge of ethylene oxide sterilization and needed precautions.
- Knowledgeable and able to implement evacuation procedures. All equipment is continuously monitored to ensure it is functioning properly.
- Assembles case carts per departmental procedures.
Shift Supervisor:
- Supervises staff and operations of sterile processing activities including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, storing, distribution of supplies, and case carts used in the OR/OB and other procedural care areas.
- Continually monitors the workload of each assignment and makes adjustments as needed.
- Oversees employee schedule and continually monitors to make sure adequate staffing is maintained.
- Provides encouragement and appropriate solutions to allow employees and coworkers to achieve departmental goals.
- Assists by being a resource person in the case cart, sterilization, decontamination, and instrument areas in the absence of the Instrument Processing Technician.
- Maintains quality aseptic procedures.
- Ensures department guidelines are adhered to.
- Provides input to the manager on evaluations and corrective counseling.
Other:
- Ensures consistent use of the barcode technology to track productivity.
- Uses computerized instrument tracking system to validate tray production against online list/error proofing systems to ensure accuracy of assembly.
- Participates in QA activities and serves on six sigma teams.
- Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition
- Assists with one-on-one training of other associates.
- Attends departmental in-services and mandatory meetings.
- Acts as a liaison between Sterile Processing and all customers and communicates in a courteous manner.
- Makes effective use of time and is able to distinguish between low and high-priority activities.
- Delivers equipment and supplies to various departments as needed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma and/or GED is required.
- Associate's Degree Preferred.
- Current registration as a C.R.C.S.T is required.
- 3 years of Sterile Processing experience is required.
- 5 years of Sterile Processing experience is preferred.
