UC Health is hiring a full time Sr. Consultant of Media Relations
The Senior Consultant of Media Relations collaborates closely with the Director of Media Relations to advance and manage the reputation of UC Health.
In this role, you will drive and communicate key messages to position UC Health as a leader in academic medicine and healthcare delivery, locally, regionally, and nationally. Your responsibilities will include developing and maintaining strong relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets, actively pitching media stories, preparing for and managing emergency situations, and establishing effective media relations processes and protocols. You will also serve as a public information officer and spokesperson for our health system.
You will work alongside the University of Cincinnati public relations team dedicated to our four health-related colleges, seeking and sharing compelling stories highlighting UC Health's purpose, values, and vision. Additionally, you will integrate media relations strategies into comprehensive marketing plans across the organization.
This role will also play a crucial role in the development and execution of an external recognition strategy that enhances UC Health's visibility and reputation. You will lead the identification and management of award nominations and external health system ratings and recognitions that elevate our academic health system's standing in the industry. The ideal candidate will have a background in media relations, strong writing skills, a strategic mindset and the ability to cultivate high-impact relationships that drive positive perception and recognition in key external channels.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, English, Writing or Marketing, plus 5+ Years Public/Media Relations, Corporate Communications, Marketing, Healthcare Administration and/or similar management experience. Experience in an integrated and complex healthcare system is required. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills and can work effectively with diverse personalities and backgrounds. Excellent organization and project management skills are needed in addition to experience in supervision. Best in class critical thinking skills and proven success in a team-based decision-making environment is necessary. Candidates must possess experienced judgement and gravitas to successfully work, counsel and engage across and up/down the organization, including the CEO, Executive Team and senior leadership.

Responsibilities
Reputation and Perception Management / Media Relations
- Drive and manage UC Health's perception and reputation through strategic communication efforts.
- Align and promote key initiatives to establish and distinguish UC Health as a leader in academic medicine, locally, regionally, and nationally, by partnering with service lines, business partners, staff, and physicians.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets to enhance message dissemination and strengthen reputation.
- Proactively develop and deliver strategic key messages to reinforce UC Health's position.
- Identify and share compelling stories highlighting UC Health's purpose, values, and vision.
- Collaborate with the UC PR team to advance our mission and improve healthcare delivery.
- Work closely with the Director to coordinate and support local campus teams (UCMC, WCH, Drake, Ambulatory) effectively.
- Integrate media relations strategies into all marketing and communications plans and programs across the organization's institutes and entities, focusing on the following service lines: Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Cardiology, Women's Health, Integrative Health, Psychiatry, executive leaders and others.
- Conduct regular media training for physicians, nurses, and leaders.
- Provide timely updates on media coverage to key stakeholders.
- Create and manage written materials, including media releases, media pitches, fact sheets, media policies, and talking points.
- Prepare strategic media briefs for physicians, nurses, and leaders before interviews and guide them in conveying strategic messages.
Emergency & Crisis Communications
- Collaborate with the Director of Media Relations, senior leaders, the Emergency Management team, and other key stakeholders to execute crisis communication strategies with the media.
- Develop and oversee the Emergency Communications Plan in coordination with senior leaders, Public Safety, and Emergency Management, ensuring regular training and updates for key leaders.
- Act as an additional spokesperson and Public Information Officer for the organization during emergencies and crises.
Award Nominations & External Recognitions
- Develop and execute an external recognition strategy to elevate the organization's brand in the industry, region and community.
- Work with system partners to discover and pursue key moments and opportunities that advance the UC Health brand among stakeholders.
- Lead application process for award nominations, including identification of candidates and submission writing.
- Manage processes for external industry ratings and recognitions through internal and external communication tactics.
- Support endorsement strategies.
Process & Planning
- Develop and implement communication frameworks to engage and influence key stakeholders, particularly strategic business and industry media outlets.
- Support creating an annual media relations plan, including establishing metrics and a tracking scorecard for performance evaluation.
- Contribute to developing protocols and process guidelines for proactive and reactive media relations.
- Provide training and mentorship to marketing and communications colleagues to enhance their understanding and effectiveness in media relations.

Qualifications
- Minimum Required: Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, English, Writing, Marketing
- Preferred: M.A., M.S., or M.B.A
- Minimum Required: 5 years equivalent experience
- Eleven to fifteen years equivalent experience, preferred.
